Well, the military I see puts the whips on the back, then bends them
forward where they are tied down with a cloth strap.  Looks like a good
way to snag every tree branch or anything else overhead.  Unless they
back into battle!  I have never understood why they do that except most 
of their radios are in the back, and I guess it reduces engine interference.
For piano wires we put a piece of angle iron up in front. (If the piano 
wire was big enough you could get your neck broke. Some guys didn't like
that.)  Why don't someone investigate the horizontal loops the German 
Africa Korps used on their command vehicles?
