There are lots of 6 meter SSB here in the Houston area.
Get on 50125 and put out a CQ.

Could someone tell me if there is much activity on 6 meters around Houston?
If I put up a vertical "flagpole" style dipole for starters will I have
someone to chat with locally? I am not particularly interested "working"
repeaters.
