You could make a 12" hole in the ceiling, and then if it comes time to sell/move, just put up some stove pipe, attached to an Antique or Modern Wood heater/stove.  Then hope the new tennants don't light a fire in it, unless you went tothe trouble of venting it through the roof.

Of course after all that work, it would probably be cheaper to put the hole in the center of the room, then when finished put a light fixture, ceiling fan, or other ceiling decoration over it!
