measure.  However to move some network cable from one side of the room
to the other I choose to run it in a piece of PVC pipe.

I suppose you could put a PVC tank flange in the ceiling and glue a
piece of PVC into it that would hide the cables coming down the wall. 
You can even paint it to make it blend in as well as can be expected. 
However like you I would prefer to run it up inside the wall if at all
possible.
