Hi,
I have seen them stacked as you described. A daub of epoxy or other glue
might be more durable than tape. The brass or copper tubes that were
mentioned are really one of the windings and that alone might be enough
to hold the assembly together. Note that the tubes are connected
(bridged) by a strip of flashing on one side of the core and the other
end of the tubes are left open - like a "U". The bridged side serves as
a center tap for that winding. The tops of the "U" are the ends of the
winding. Solid state amps have to match some very low impedances.
