Doug,
 
  A HOT iron and working fast would be preferred over a warm iron and working slower.  You could also wrap a wet paper towell on the other side of the pins to keep the conducted heat down. 
  You may also need to wire brush and flux if solder won't 'wet' the pins.  Are you using non-leaded solder?
