Some time back (Maybe in the 1970s) I ran across a set of plans to use an 
automobile alternator run by a 5 HP lawnmower engine to produce 120 VAC. It 
looked like a very simple project as far as the circuit was concerned. Think 
the hardest part was getting a frame built to hold everything.
