The limiting i-f amplifier stages are probably running in Class C, meaning they will distort an am signal. Fm receivers use limiting amplifiers to saturate the detector. As only frequency variations matter, amplitude distortion isn't a problem. The manual section "Block 2" explains the process. As all this stuff is being done on a chip it isn't feasible to modify it for am reception.
