[HomeBrew] Using broadcast FM receivers.

I have a single-conversion broadcast-band FM tuner kit that works and I never 
use.  What chance is there of converting it to the 146 MHz band as a monitor?  
Sensitivity seems reasonable on about a metre (say a yard) of wire.  Would 
the IF channel be too broad?
