The main problems with the classic RC equalizing networks on silicon diodes 
were:

- the voltage rating of the resistors could be exceeded
- the tolerance of the disk capacitors was such that they could cause worse 
unbalance than the diodes themselves.

Retired? When did that happen?

oh yes - I use 866As.
