[HomeBrew] Power supply and battery

Hi All,

Being in the middle of the coldest winter in 50 years, and a snowstorm that
interrupts power
for a couple of seconds several times per hour, I hooked up a 12 volt dry
rechargable battery
in parallel to my Alinco DM-330MV supply. The battery worked as an on-line
ups and my equipment
did not turn off and on every few minutes.
BUT
Will this voltage in the power supply output from the battery damage the
power supply while its
off ?
Would some sort of circuit prevent any possible damage to the power supply ?
