Help !

 Anyone with first-hand experience with the National Semi LM1971 ( or 1972
or 1973 ) audio atten chips... please reply... I simply CANNOT make this
@#&^%%$#!! thing WORK the way the spec sheet says it does...

 I'm not doing anything "dumb"... no "guesses" please... it simply does NOT
respond to commands from my micro, there is some IMPORTANT information
"missing" in the spec sheet...
