Hi, everyone,
I apologize for an off-topic message, but this is a request from hams, to
hams who often come through with the best info. An off-list reply is
probably best, to kn4aq at arrl.net.
My all-ham family will be making our bi-annual visit to Maui and the Big
Island in a few weeks. We're looking for some insider information in
Kilauea volcano lava guides or tours.
My wife (Cyndi KD4ACW) and I have made the arduous trek from the end of
Chain of Craters road into the active lava area twice, so we know what the
hike involves. And while it was thrilling, once we got out there in the
active area, our concern for safety and lack of experience kept us from
exploring and seeing as much we could.
So we're looking for a tour, or an experienced guide, who can take us
farther than we're willing to go on our own.
We're aware of the risks of thin crust/skylights and bench collapse. We
know that nobody can guarantee safety. We're planning a helicopter tour.
But we'd also like to take one more hike on the ground, especially now.
There are a lot of ads and web sites for tours - mostly in vans that drive
around the park and walk you through the Thurston lava tube. We're looking
for something that starts where the road ends.
Thanks and 73,
Gary KN4AQ
