Rick, yes the decoder helps to increase my head speed. Another thing is
I do not type very fast so I have to write. I can relax at high speed and
enjoy it more if I have a decoder to help. Enjoying high speed Morse
helps my want to learn. I also have a MFJ-493 memory keyer which can use
a keyboard. My Patcomm PC-500 can send Morse with a keyboard.
MixW software has a long type ahead buffer so I can make up for my slow
typing. I can type the answers to questions while receiving. My typing
speed is increasing also using the keyboard.
MixW software has a manual mode where the decoder is turned off. This
allows you to decode and type. This mode gives cleaner copy for good
CW operators, since all decoders miss and add garbage to the copy.
