What you are hearing in the receiver is feedback from the minute bits of 
room noise.  You can get around this easily.

First, unplug the mike.  Then make a wire jumper or clip lead to short 
the PTT line to ground to put the rig in transmit.  You should then have 
an audio-free signal, and you can proceed with the alignment.

Nice rig BTW.  Always wanted one.
