[Heathkit] HR-1680 Dead Band

Exactly right, Rodger!

I had that problem with my DX-60A when I was a Novice. Crystals would
drop out of oscillation on 40 meters. With no drive the final current
went sky high. The SB/HW series heterodyne oscillators can do that,
too. I had an HR-1680 many years ago. It was a nice receiver, but I
never used it much, so I sold it. These days, my DX60A is paired with
an Icom R-71A (out of period, I know, but much better than the
Hammarlund HQ-100A).

         73,

Proper adjustment for reliable crystal operation is to set it just a little bit away from peak output on the side where output drops slowly. If you can't get it to work make sure that the coil leads are intact. Sometimes the core sticks and the leads get broken when the core is forced and the entire form rotates. Often these breaks can be repaired.

It is much easier to find parts for these than the less popular HR-1680.
