You would only have to do anything to the receiver if you want to hear wide audio range. You can certainly receive a.m. on an SB 110.
I have many years of experience receiving AM stations on a rig designed to receive SSB.

You would have to diddle not only with the transmitter section but also
the receiver section. It isn't worth the effort or the time. You're
better off finding a cheap 6M transceiver (Heath, Gonset, Lafayette,
Knight, and a host of others) at a local hamfest. I saw a great looking
Lafayette HA-460 6 M transceiver at local hamfest recently for about $30.
