My first thought is that an 11 meter operator got a hold of it, attempting to disable the ALC in a mistaken belief that this would somehow increase power or "audio". Bob noted evidence of the "11 meter golden screwdriver" in a few other rigs he's fixed. You might do well to check for other 11 meter type mods in your HW-100.

I had done my share of half-baked mods back in the day, had fun doing them, learned a lot, and always had documented the mods so that I could subsequently return the radios to stock when I found that the mods didn't work.
