[Heathkit] virus

XP was a fairly good OS.

Windows 7 is more stable, far, far more secure, easier to setup, and
fast. Install Microsoft Security Essentials (free A/V) and you're good
to go. Windows 8 is a little faster and a little easier to set up, but
the Metro interface is a pain.

Indeed, a there has been a lot of that over the years. I was pleasantly
surprised when I installed last year's version of Kubuntu on a Tyan
Tiger dual Athlon 2800+ box. I was prepared for the worst with Tyan
being a bit more esoteric than your usual klone hardware, but it went on
with minimal fuss. Even when I dropped in a WiFi card after the fact, I
was prepared for much wailing and gnashing of teeth because wireless
setup has always involved many four-letter incantations and jumping
through hoops. Even that was virtually painless. The latest Xastir
compiled and ran like a dream.

Granted, the computer has only been used once a year since as an APRS
demo box at a hamfest, but it's been trouble free. Even after sitting
for a year and having parts swapped out of it to troubleshoot another
box... :)

If I had 144.39 crystals for that old Heathkit 2-Meter rig, I would put
it on the air "Powered by Heath".

Similar story when I installed Kubuntu on a dual-boot IBM 6850 dual
Xeon. I just didn't have time to follow the learning curve to set it up
as a server before I had to actually use it as a server when I needed
storage space RIGHT NOW, so it sits in a corner running XP Pro. Waste of
computer horsepower...
I'll get a round tuit someday. Eventually I will set up a FreeNAS box,
just haven't fleshed the plan out yet.

I haven't migrated completely to Linux due to software concerns. Before
I got banished to Windows XP hell, I was an OS/2 power user. Microsoft
has yet to impress me, and I don't like having a big target virtually
painted on my computer.
