Any time a scope trace suffers from anomolies over it's width it is a pretty
good indication that there is a problem with the sweep run up cicuit. That
is the circuit that generates a ramp signal to deflect the beam left to
right in this case.
The output from that circuit should be a straight sloped line. If the line
is bent or bowed the trace will be compressed or expanded across the screen.
The scene you are discribing could be oscillations on the sweep run up.
You need a service scope to service the scope properly.
