[Heathkit] refurbishing a HW-101

Depends on your definition of "Right way to go".  If you want to get it back 
to all factory spec's, you will get very close to it but crystal aging will 
still be there.  You will also spend a considerable amount of time making 
what is essentially what you already have.  If you want a good kit 
experience get an Elecraft.
A refurbish sounds more like it.  Clean all the contacts, tighten the 
boards, replace weak tubes and dark looking power resistors.  Anything that 
looks crispy, get rid of it.
Also, re-cap the power supply.  The HP 23 is a super good PS but suffers 
from the old cap syndrome just like any other BA.  When you get tired of the 
HW 100 you can step up to an SB 100 series.  Much better vfo.
