Hi. I know we don't want to get into politics, but I thought this relates directly the Heathkit schematic copyright issue discussed here so often. I just received the following from a web hosting company explaining their position about what's going on. Read on if so inclined, or please hit delete.
Regards, Karl.
Dear Sir/Miss,
You may have heard about Protect-IP (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act
SOPA) currently under consideration in Congress. If passed, among other
hings, SOPA requires Web hosting companies like 1&1 to police websites in
rder to prevent them from communicating copyrighted information on the
nternet. We would like to make sure you are aware of 1&1’s official
osition on SOPA.
As a global provider of domains and hosting services, we oppose the Stop
nline Piracy Act (SOPA) or Protect-IP (PIPA) Acts currently under
onsideration. While we observe the concerns of those who are troubled by
he potential impact on protecting intellectual property online, 1&1 feels
here is an urgent need to strike a balance between dissemination of and
ccess to information and protection against its illegal use within the
ublic domain.
The US government is currently reviewing SOPA and PIPA as possible ways to
revent unlawful distribution of copyrighted materials available on the
nternet. These current proposals, if passed, would allow for significant
nterventions into the technological and economical basis of the internet.
his could put the vast benefits and economic opportunities of entirely
egal and legitimate e-business models at risk. Generally, companies
ffering technological services should not be forced to be the executor of
uthority in such matters. If they were to act upon every implication of
ontent infringement without any judicial research into the actual usage of
ts customers, the integrity behind their customer’s freedom of
nformation and speech would be enormously harmed.
&1 Internet, Inc. has worked through associations and with related
ompanies to ensure that these aspects are taken into account. Thus, we
elcome the serious consideration by the US Congress of the potential
armful effects on Internet freedom should SOPA and / or PIPA be passed as
aw, and hope the stability of the Internet’s domain name system (DNS)
emains intact.
We encourage every Internet user concerned about these plans to contribute
o the debate and to raise their voice with their local representatives in
he House or Senate. One way to express your concerns could be to use one
f the websites that emerged to protect user interests in the current
egislative debate, such as http://fightforthefuture.org/.
At 1&1 we support you, our customer, and an open internet. If you find that
ou are supporting a company that encourages SOPA and wish to drop them as
provider, please follow the simple instructions contained on the website
inked below.
hank you for being one of our extremely valued customers, and for taking
he time to read this.
est regards,
rederick Iwans
eneral Manager 1&1 Internet Inc.

If you are talking about all the colored bars that are now appearing: There are
-links at the very top of the page. One says "STOP CENSORSHIP" and the other
ays "remove this". If you "click" on the stop you are taken to a website
gainst some bill in Congress that supposedly has to do with some kind of
ensorship on the Internet. The remove link takes away all of the bars and the
ite remains clean until you close down your browser and open it again.
I started a thread on QRZ.com about this several days ago. Someone said that he
ooked at the Javascript of the site and that it appears that the site owner has
dded this to the site apparently to call attention to the bill.
