Hi Walt
I'll chime in here, and I'm sure others will too.
#1) Yes, any similarly sized bare wire is fine... no special requirements!
#2) You did right , and the proof is in the operation.
Enjoy it. While I never had the SB1000, I did have a AL80A which I believe
is the same amp. Nice smooth amp...enjoy it!
