Yes, 4 ma is a bit too much for the 6146. I peaked mine too just as the
manual says after my DX-40 arrived and destroyed a 6146 after running it
that way for awhile. It had been too long since owning a rig with a 6146 in
it. About 2ma would be fine, 3 ma would be maximum. Just back off on the
drive to 2 ma and all will be fine, doesn't need to be peaked.
Antique Electronic Supply sells the 6DE7 for $3.80. I've had good luck with
tubes from them.
Who cares what the rig looks like, the op on the other end of the QSO will
never see it unless you send a picture. You'll have as much fun as with the
first girlfriend too.
