It can be done. My girlfriend recently received a bakelite cased radio
from Chile (we live in North Texas) without damage. It was properly
packed.

It had bubble wrap around it, securely taped. This was placed inside
what looked like a small styrofoam ice chest. This was wrapped in more
bubble wrap, surrounded by a couple of inches of peanuts. This was
placed inside a cardboard box, with another five inches of peanuts.
That was placed inside a box.

Which was good, b/c she spent a lot of money on that radio.
