Along this line, try using a digital camera like the one used for video 
on your computer (if you have one available).  Something that my son 
demonstrated to me recently is that these sensors are quite sensitive to 
IR light that is beyond Human visual range.  I have also read where some 
are also sensitive to UV light.  In short they have a higher bandwidth 
than your eye!!  If there is arcing, it just "might" show up like a 
flashing neon sign!
