Penson also says that the rig can be converted to LSB by changing the
crystal from 3396.5 MHz to 3393.5 MHz. He also says that "VFO operation
is possible by connecting the VFO output directly to one of the crystal
sockets (observe polarity) via a short length of RG-58/U. VFO output
should be between 1 and 2 volts RMS."

So it probably would not be hard to convert it to 75 m LSB. It wold be
really intriguing to convert it to 60 meters, but the cost of crystals
for channelizing it these days might be more than the rig is worth.

(We had a local CAP Sqdn here that ran one out of the county EOC, but I
bet with the high cost of the Motorola type-accepted radio that replaced
the HW-18-1, I doubt if any local CAP sqdns are running HF any more. I
haven't heard activity on the CAP 4 MHz frequencies in years).

If the radio is in good condition, convert it to a ham band and put it
on the air. It's a piece of history!

Mike Bryce, WB8VGE (The Heathkit Shop) can probably help you. He has
some HW-18s in his collection, I'm sure.
