[Heathkit] SB-10/SB-200 combo

Tom,
Its a stretch to use the SB-10 to drive the SB-200. The max the SB-10 puts
out is 6 or 7 watts. This will even overdrive a AB1 amp using say a 4-400A
as I did years ago. In AB1 about 1 watt is all you need. You need 80 or 90
watts to drive the SB-200.
Most believe that you hook the SB-10 into say an Apache or DX-100 and that
would work for driving the SB-10 as you have an amp in between.
Most VFO's only have an RMS voltage output of 15 or 20 and I have found you
need 40 or 80 RMS and with that you get a couple of watts out of the SB-10.
On SSB the key is to find a very stable VFO/exciter. You could build one
using a Collins PTO, use the 310C or B Collins exciter or a Commercial
exciter that allows you to control the output such as the Ten Tec Century.
If you must try a Heath VFO use the later HG-10 not the VF-1 but its best to
use a VFO with its own power supply especially if it has voltage regulation.
There was an article in a mid 1960's CQ that built a complete 50 watts
exciter with the SB-10 in its cabinet. You still need a stable VFO.
Good luck Dave K4JRB
