Look for a large electrolytic coupling 
capacitor in the audio chain that has 
decreased considerably in value.

You can check this best by coupling an 
audio oscillator to the output of the 
SSB detector and sweeping the frequency 
downward. See what stage the audio drops off.

Another possibility is mis-adjusted BFO, 
so that you are catching only the outside 
(extreme low on LSB and/or extreme high 
on USB) of the RF envelope.
