The SB-401 did not come with the heterodyne crystals, they were a separate item.  When used with the SB-300, SB-301, and SB-303 the receiver supplies the necessary frequencies for the transmitter to operate.

Just got a nice SB-401 and have it sitting on the table right now. on opening the lid on the right front f the chasis is 7 crystal sockets and no crystals!!  Do I have a problem???
 
It also has a ready set of labeled cables for it.
