[Heathkit] HW 16 output

Hello Mike and Tom,

The HW-16 is rated between 50 to 90 watts "input" (adjustable).

Measure the final plate voltage and the final plate current at resonance (maximum output). Multiply the plate voltage by the plate current will give you the actual DC input power in the final amplifier. Subtract a minimum of 50% from the input power should give you the average DC output power in CW. I recommend using a 50 ohm dummy load when making these checks.

The schematic shows the final's plate voltage is 700VDC. In order to achieve 90 watts input, the final tube's plate current at maximum output would be 130ma. Using ohm law, multiple the plate voltage by plate current (700 x .130 = 91 watts) input in the final. Subtract a minimum of 50% efficiency in the final should produce a maximum output of 45 watts. Of course that's if the power supply is capable of producing full output voltage and current at maximum RF output, the tubes are good, and the HW-16 is aligned properly.

I agree with Mike, more than likely someone has mess with the entire alignment which will affect both the transmitter and receiver.

Thanks for the input. Yes, I have installed 5 output tubes without meanfull
change in output into Bird 43 and good Dummy load I will next re install
other 6cl6's; even though current ones test quite good on my Hickock
600a.Will investigate B+ as you suggect. I also have a clip on HP ampmeter
that reads 1 Amp max So between the two I may find that do NOT have as much
input as they say. Oh well; This just supposed to be fun anyway. Mike G
