It has been my experience with the 6146B/8298A and the
6146W that they will work in "some" transmitters
designed for the earlier versions. I have worked on
as many as 3 transmitters of identical design that
have had serial numbers within 10 of each other. The
6146B/8298A worked in 1 and the other 2 wouldn't even
come close to neutralizing!
It is basically a "throw of the dice" if a certain
transmitter will work with the later versions.
Component tolerances add up "differently" in each unit
and that definitely can make a difference. Even then
one "run" of tubes may be slightly different and the
next time one tries to use the 6146B/8298A the results
may be different.
However, the "rule of thumb" is to use the 6146,
6146A/8298, or the 6293 in transmitters designed for
the earlier versions if possible. Yes, some
transmitters work fine with the later versions. Yes,
some people haven't had any problems using the later
versions. But, the vast majority of transmitters are
definitely not "happy" with the 6146B/8298A or the
6146W if they were originally designed for the 6146 or
6146A/8298.

I have been using a pair of real 6146Bs (not the
etched kind) in my HW-101 for the past year, and they
have worked just fine, but I had to be extremely
careful about the neutralization, both for the finals
and for the driver. I used the remove-the-B+ method to
neutralize the finals.
