[Heathkit] Question about tubes

I just placed my entire inventory of tubes on an ecel spreadsheet and as I was doing so I wondered how each tubes received its designation. 

I know the forst number(s) denote the filament volage but who, how and why is the remainder of the tube named as it is with other letters and numbers?

Just one of those criosity questions I suppose.  But anyone have any idea how tubes were assigned their designations?
