I thought this was one of those things that "everyone knows", but just
in case...
The easy way to prepare small coax with braided shield such as RG188 or
... for use is NOT to "comb out the braid".
Strip off the outer jacket, then bend the exposed end in a tight "U"
shape. Using a small pick, separate the braid over the base of the "U",
exposing the center conductor. Then insert the pick under the center
conductor and pull it up, sliding the "open" end out of the shield.
Done carefully, you end up with the center conductor and a stub of
braid. MUCH easier to do than explain!!
