Gene and the group,

An age old dilema, for sure................ I've been on all sides of
this decision over the years and with a variety of BA's to consider,
but you may have given a clue when you mentioned the "re-done" panel.
That likely leads to a cabinet paint job and the chassis being either
re-plated or polished out depending on the original finish. No matter
what, it's no longer original. If the intent is to operate it, then
why not go ahead and use new, in-tolerance parts? If it's to only sit
on a shelf, then use the prettiest carbon comp resistors possible to
give the "original look". Once again, if it's not to be used then
capacitors won't be an issue. Just clean up and re-use the old ones.

I'm just at the beginning of a "re-kitting" for a DX-100. I have all
of the original parts. But I made the decision to put this puppy on
the air when it's finished so it will get new resistors and in most
cases, new caps. There are some instances where even "new" caps can't
be had. Try finding the HV micas used in the loading circuit for
instance. But I want the rig to work well on the air, and the only way
is to equip it with modern components. Thankfully, the tubes haven't
changed. HI Hi

Just a thought. As always, YMMV.

Good luck, Gene, with the re-kitting. I'm finding it fun to build a
Heathkit that's 50 years old here in modern day 2007.

Subject: [FLBOATANCHORS] Opinion needed

I would like the collective opinion of the groups regarding restoration
of
DX series (Or any other boatanchor for that matter) radios:

I have two that I want to "re-kit" and I wonder if it would change the
value
of the radio if the re-kitting was done with 'modern' style resistors
and
caps.

Most all of my stock of the Ohmite style (and what I have been able to
purchase) resistors are too far off value to use so I wonder about
using the
newer film resistors and also the newer electrolytics.

Do you think that by using the newer parts it would decrease the value
of
the restored equipment?

I am talking about a complete restoration, including a re-done front
panel.

TIA
