I have a DX-60A, with a clear meter. The original DX-60 had a smaller
illuminated meter with a fancy green frame around it, like the plastic
frame around the dial on the HG-10 VFO. According to Penson's book, this
design gave way to a less expensive plain meter in the DX-60A. That is
the meter that I have in mine. Some DX-60A meters had a white scale
plate and some were yellow. The DX-60B used the meter with the dark band
at the bottom to conceal the movement. Again, according to Penson, some
DX-60B's were supplied with the clear meter. Probably Heathkit just used
the clear DX-60A meter in the DX-60B until they ran out.
My DX-60A dates from Christmas 1965. My Novice license arrived in
February 1966. My DX-60A is still operational and ready to go. I don't
use it much, but its nice to run when the weather gets cooler and the
shack can use some supplemental heating. I can check into the cw traffic
nets and it always put out a fine signal. No one seems to notice the
difference between the DX-60A and one of my "modern" rigs.
