John,
The only completely effective way to do this is to remove the front
panel and take off the dial mechanism. It's really not all that
difficult, especially if you have the assembly manual. In the process,
you'll not only end up with a nice looking dial but it'll work better
too after you clean the parts.
If you don't have the assembly manual, let me know and I'll try to walk
you through it.
