My guess is that the filter is good. As Greg suggested, it's the switch.
If it turns out that the AM filter is bad, you might open it, resolder
the internal connections.
Even if the filter is bad, that's not a major loss. If you can get it
working as a one or two crystal filer, that's an improvement as the
Heathkit stock 3.75 kHz filter is too sharp.
I also saw an SB-303 with a couple IF transformers for AM. I don't have
any details on this modification but many like a wide, sloppy IF, 8, 10
kHz wide.
