Howdy Bob,
First off before you go changing components and such.
If you have a variac available I would make sure the rig
is not in transmit mode, and after doing a visual check
top and bottom, try bringing it up to around 60 VAC
and letting it just sit for a bit while monitoring for smoke
or smells etc. The visual inspection should tell you quite
a bit, since you have the manual, you want to look for
obvious differences from what the manual says it looks
like. Once you're satisfied that everything seems in the
right places, then bring it up to 60 and give it a chance
to come up to close to operating temperature. Check that
pilot lamps work, all tubes light up, and things like that.
Once you are comfortable, that nothing is obviously wrong
bring it up to full voltage (115 VAC) and again let it sit in
standby for a while. The do a few voltage checks. High voltage
is one also check the filament volts to the tubes, screen supply volts
and bias to both the 6146s and the 1625s. If all is well then yes
you can load it up into a light bulb (100 watts or so). If it loads OK
then you want to see where it is frequency wise, have a receiver
you can listen to the VFO/OSC in the receiver when you put the
rig in CW mode and with it in standby.
At this point you may want to try a little AM with it if all else is
A-OK. While using it into the light bulb, you will see the bulb
brighten a little, if you have your mike level to high.
If you get stuck fire off an email, I am usually around the lists,
especially this one. Time is usually not a problem, day time,
night time, anytime. I usually check on the hour.
Oh and enjoy the new rig, I enjoy mine, got 4 here for various
applications.
