[Heathkit] DX-60 Problem

Actually modern electrolytics are about 1/4th to 1/5th
the physical size of the older capacitors and are much
closer in tolerance to the stated value. Even those
of a higher voltage rating are going to generally be
considerably smaller in physical size than the
originals.

One thing that I have found in replacing paper
capacitors in receivers that were manufactured during
the 1930s is that sometimes I have to place a high
value resitor (over 1 meg) in parallel with new
capacitors to get the circuit to operate properly. It
seems that the original leakage of the capacitor
figured into the circuit design!

My experience is that electrolytics dry with age and
the MFD value will decrease. Anything over say 20+
years should have the electrolytics replaced with
equal value and equal voltage units. Don't increase
the value of the C too much. A higher value voltage
rating is OK if you have the space as they are
typically a bit larger in size.
