I posted this yesterday, but the heathkit list rejected it, so I'll try again.....
Your typical radio puts out 100W.
200W - 3 db
400W - 6 db
800W - 9 db
1600W - 12 db (if one were to run 1600W....)
It's interesting to consider some commercial linears, such as Ameritron
(excellant linears).
With respect to the AL-811H (800W output):
AL-811H 800W $849
AL-80B 1000 W $1399 1db more for $550
AL-800 1250W $1825 1.9 db more for $976
AL-572 1300W $1495 2.1 db more for $646
AL-82 1500W $2649 2.7 db more for $1830
Tube lineup and other considerations notwithstanding, I can't see why
anyone would want to buy a linear that isn't 800W or 1500W output.
You're less than 3 db (1/2 an S unit)!!
That last 3 db (almost) of gain is very expensive. Compared to my 3
element yagi, for the difference of $1830, I can get a whopper yagi
that will give me that 3 db (almost), plus give me superior side and
back rejection!!
