The SB-101 is usually much happier with the 6146 or
6146A / 8298 rather than the 6146B / 8298A. There are
individual exceptions within equipment types, but
generally the equipment that was designed for the
earlier versions of the 6146 have problems with the
6146B / 8298A (or any 6146W with a code date of 1965
or later - code dates of 1964 can be either 6146A or
6146B equivalents). The problems usually appear in
neutralization.
For the article on the 6146 family of tubes that
appeared in Electric Radio (and has been republished
in several other publications) a while back, go to

and click on the first link from the home page. The
6146 article is the very first article under the
heading "Articles".

I have a SB 101 and I want to replace the finals with
new ones. The problem is that due to age the 6146 A or
B labeling has worn off. Which 6146 do I use?
