No. I've used them both with an HW-16, and in fact the HG-10 is NOT
"VASTLY" more stable than a VF-1. It depends on WHICH VF-1 and
WHICH HG-10.
A properly built (or re-built) VF-1 will be at least as stable as a properly
built (or rebuilt) HG-10, sometimes more.
Also, for either one, a lot depends on the choice of oscillator tube. I had
to go through 4 or 5 6CH8s in order to get my HG-10B to be as stable,
and to key as well as, my re-built VF-1.
Of course, I also had to "hand select" a 6AU6 for the VF-1 to get it to
operate at its best capability.
When I changed the 6AU6 to a 6AH6 and dropped the regulated
voltage from 150 VDC to 108 VDC as suggested by Glen Zook, that
made the VF-1 even more stable.
The VF-1 is a good VFO...as is the HG-10.
I use a re-built VF-1 as my main VFO with my HW-16 for CW net and
general operating.
I had one of our net members tell me the other day that my rig sounded
like a new rice-box. I wasn't sure that I liked the comparison, but I
understood that he meant it as a compliment.
