My thanks to all of you who replied on and off list to my inquiry. I am
trying the various suggestions offered and will post the results when and if
I have a cure.
By the way, I forgot to mention that I had tried re-peaking the heterodyne
oscillator coils in transmit mode -- no joy there.
The slugs of the IPA tuned circuits are intact and both the plate and grid
circuits were peaked in transmit mode and are in fact resonant.
Whatever the cause, I seem to be getting adequate grid drive into the 6CL6
IPA stage. I just can't translate that into full output from the PA stage.
As noted, I have the problem only on 40 meters. It almost seems as though I
have some sort of unintended resonance sucking power out of the IPA or off
the PA grids.
Right now, my efforts are aimed at grounding issues. One of the Heath
service bulletins addressed specifically to the "low output on 40" problem
advocates disconnecting the switch board-to-ground plane connections for the
IPA plate and grid circuits. This seems counter-intuitive, but I'm going to
try it.
