Hi Carl.  The gadget is a thermal overload device.  They are popular in home
appliances (like coffee makers, hair dryers, etc).   Rat Shack used to sell them
but called them thermal fuses I think.  Probably try Mouser, and I'm pretty sure
Newark has them, too.

Bypassing them is like putting pennies under the fuses.......
