[Heathkit] paint

Heathkit used at least 4 different shades of green for
the cabinets and 3 different shades of green for the
front panels. There seemed to be no "rhyme or reason"
as to which color was used on which unit. The same
colors appeared at various times during the production
runs.

It was definitely possible to order an SB-301, SB-401,
SB-600, and SB-620 at the same time and receive the
equipment with all 4 different shades of cabinet
colors and all 3 different shades of front panel.

I own equipment, and have owned other items that I
have traded off, that have/had all shades of both the
cabinet and front panel colors. The cabinet colors
range from a pretty sickly color of green to a light
gray with "just a hint" of green (which is in my
opinion the "best" looking color - this color was used
on the SB-104 series). The front panels range from a
very dark green to a medium green.

What I have done is to repaint all of my cabinets to
the SB-104 color. However, there is nothing practical
that can be done to get all the front panels the same
color unless you want to completely repaint and then
silkscreen the panels.

I do have the Sherwin-Williams "formula" for the
SB-104 color and have made that formula known several
times to this, and other reflectors. If desired, I
can publish the formula again. I normally get the
paint in 1 quart sizes in acryllic "satin finish"
paint. The cost runs right at $11 (US) for a quart.
You do need a spray gun to apply the paint unless your
Sherwin-Williams store is one of the relative few that
can "load" spray cans. Of course loading spray cans
does add to the cost. Acryllic paint dries very
"hard" yet does clean up (and "thin") with water.

There are other paint companies that can work from the
Sherwin-Williams formula if there is not a
Sherwin-Williams outlet near to you.

My question is : l have the SB-301 receiver and the
SB-401 transmitter, the only difference is the color
of green.

This, l know, sounds very minor, but l just want to
know if Heathkit changed their color of green some
time in the SB series run?

My 301 is a bit darker green than my 401 transmitter,
l know they were not painted, because afetr looking at
them so often l would know, the paint is definately
professionally done at the factory.

My friend here in Ottawa, told me that Heath did
change their shades of green sometime during the run
of the SB, series.
