The chokes serve two purposes.

1. To slightly raise the grid above ground DC wise by virtue of the 26 Ohms
resistance and to noticably improve IMD.
2. To act as a fuse in case of an internal tube arc or short.

My high school radio club station had a HW-101 feeding a SB-200. I remember
on a couple occasions, somebody would try to tune things up with the HW-101
set on one band, and the SB-200 on a different band (I didn't do it!). The
grid resistors would blow out. I suppose this might have actually helped protect
the rest of the amplifier (?). Frustrating, but a resistor is cheap to
replace compared to the tubes or whatever else might have overloaded or arced out.
