[Heathkit] HL-2200/SB-220 questions...

The SB-220 and variants are based on a pretty standard design.
A design discussion is available in any Radio Handbook or search the WEB
The grids are held off ground to improve IM performance. The cost is an 
slightly increased drive requirement.
I would not  change the Heath design
