The same thing was done with "The Hardy Boys and the Shortwave Radio
Mystery". A friend had the original. I obtained a copy as a collectible,
but the equipment description had been updated.
I can see why they would want to update the equipment descriptions for a
new generation of readers, but then the books lose their significance as
amateur radio history.
1964-1965 were my "pre-Novice" years and I remember the Carl and Jerry
series in Popular Electronics. That magazine at the time had an
excellent mix of Hi-Fi, gadgets, CB, SWL and amateur radio articles. I
don't think there is anything comparable today, other than Popular
Communications, which IMHO is a unsophisticated by comparison.
Did anyone make the Radio Boys or Carl and Jerry available as reprints
or CD's?
These adventure stories, a novice license, and Heathkit gear were
perfect together and a cherished part of my own personal ham radio history.

In the 1980s I was very disappointed after buying the whole set, finding it was full of kids running around with HTs, so I donated the whole batch to a thrift store. Even then, already, I was tiring of the League's incessant propaganda. Anyway...if you'd like some GREAT substitutes for the "tainted" Tommy Rockford series redieux I heartily recommend these substitutes: CALLING W1XYZ, (Jimmy Kean and the Radio Spies series) by Thorf McClusky. These are in a small book format known as "Better Little Books" and published by Whitman Publishing Co in the 1939-era. Another GREAT series of books are the "Radio Boys" series from about the same era and most titled start with "Radio Boys Mystery of _____." And OF COURSE get hold of some 1950s and 60s Popular Electronics and enjoy John Frye's CARL AND JERRY stories that were a monthly feature.
