[Heathkit] SB 102 vs HW 101

The warble in the Heath SB-Line LMOs is caused by a
drying out of the grease used in lubricating the
variable capacitor. A little bit of cleaning and then
relubricating cures that problem for another several
decades.

I have had to do this to my SB-110A, SB-301, and
SB-401. After cleaning the warble is gone and the
tuning is again very smooth.

The typical tube type LMO is well within 1 KHz at any
point on the dial and is generally more stable than
the VFO in the HW-100 / HW-101. Of course there are
exceptions, but, in general, the LMO is definitely
better than the VFO.

Back in the 1970's, I had an SB-100, and this HW-101
is better performing, VFO-wise, than my SB-100. The
SB-100's LMO tended to "warble" when I tuned. I
didn't know enough back then, nor have the test gear
that I have now, to enable me to try to cure the
problem.
